Veterans’ Powwow

Proportionally, Native Americans are one of the largest minority groups to serve in the armed forces. This past weekend, I had the privilege of attending a powwow that specifically honored Native American veterans. While the event had the hallmarks of other powwows I have attended – dances, music, cultural celebration, and vendors selling an array of beautiful crafts – there were also special moments to recognize veterans’ service, and American flags were everywhere. I was humbled to meet many men and women of Native American descent who risked their lives for our country, despite its historic abuse and exploitation of their communities. This is a story I hope to explore further in the coming months.
