‘I Feel Like I’m Back Home’ (In Progress)

Columbus, Ohio is home to an estimated 25,000 Ethiopian-Americans and more than 10 Ethiopian churches. At least four of these institutions follow the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo tradition, the largest of the Oriental Orthodox faiths.

But for many Ethiopian immigrants, Orthodox churches serve not only as places of worship, but as a means of cultural celebration and preservation.

“I feel like I’m back home,” one parishioner said during Meskel, a ceremony commemorating the discovery of the True Cross by the Roman Empress Helena.
