Holi

As part of the Religious Soundmap Project, I recently attended a Holi celebration at the Bharatiya Hindu Temple in Columbus. Holi, which marks the arrival of spring, is thought to celebrate fertility, love, and color, and the triumph of good over evil. While I have visited the temple previously, I had never seen it so crowded, nor so full of energy, sound, and color. After a relatively short indoor service, participants flooded the pavement outside of the temple, where they tossed a rainbow of colors beneath the fluorescent lights.

People were instructed not to come back inside once they had tossed the colors, but at least one person didn’t get the memo.

I also recently attended the Gift of Light Expo, another New Age spiritual festival at the Ohio Expo Center. This “organic mandala” – made entirely of rice, beans, lentils, and peas – jumped out at me.
