This was a busy weekend in Columbus! As part of my work for the American Religious Sounds Project, I recorded and photographed at two major events in town – ComFest, and a protest by the Westboro Baptist Church.
On Friday, the Westboro Baptist Church arrived to picket the Unitarian Universalist General Assembly, which was being held at the Columbus Convention Center. Protesters then traveled up High Street to the Ohio State University campus, where they picketed the recent hiring of an LGBTQ community supporter. In both cases, counter-protesters far outnumbered the WBC members. At one point, a group of women dressed as angels arrived to help keep the peace. I found myself fascinated by all of the visual juxtapositions.
Friday also marked the beginning of ComFest (not to be confused with ComiCon!), an annual community activism/arts festival in Goodale Park. On Sunday morning, I had the privilege of attending a Druid summer solstice ritual hosted by Three Cranes Grove.
And, because I can never resist a bird photo, here is my cockatiel, Sable, with my friend, Hannah.
Thanks for looking!
