A Spiritual High

Pentecostal serpent-handlers in Appalachia have taken up venomous snakes during their worship services since the early 1900s. At the Tabernacle Church of God in La Follette, Tennssee, 23-year-old Pastor Andrew Hamblin leads a millennial generation of serpent-handlers in their 20s and 30s. While some have inherited the practice from their families, others initially heard about it through social media. For Andrew and many of his congregation members, the religious practice provides a direct connection to God and an escape from a troubled past.
